Slide The Medical Problem
Early detection of breast cancers missed by screening mammography with approximately 200,000 new breast cancer cases diagnosed in the U.S. every year, of which 35-40% have already spread beyond the breast. The numbers for Europe and the rest of the developed world are very similar, and the need for effective new technology that allows early detection of the “killing cancers” is equally obvious.

While screening with full field digital mammography (FFDM) has been demonstrated to enable a reduction in overall breast cancer mortality by as much as 30%, it has failed to provide a satisfactory level of early cancer detection in women with Dense Breast Tissue (DBT). Approximately 40% of all women have DBT and it is estimated that FFDM misses more than 50% of all cancers in women with DBT. Women with DBT account for approximately 70% of all invasive breast cancers, and having DBT carries a greater risk than having two (2) first-degree relatives with breast cancer.

The average five year survival rate of women who are diagnosed with a large 20mm+ (8/10”+) cancer is approximately 80%, while the average five year survival rate of women diagnosed with a cancer smaller than 10mm (4/10”) is approximately 98%. Early detection and intervention is therefore critically important as it is the only way to significantly reduce the high mortality and morbidity currently associated with breast cancer. Mammography is the gold standard for breast screening It uniquely can show in opportune conditions micro-calcifications (often the only sign of early cancer)

But :

It uses ionizing radiation (potentially dangerous)*
- It’s painful (cause it needs of breast compression)
- It yields high rate of false alarms (with huge number of unnecessary biopsies)
- It misses up 50% of cancer in women with dense breast
- It is not suitable in young women

* Mammography is performed yearly since 40 to 75 yrs. It requires at least two Xray exposures for each breast. Every 1000 women screened with mammography you can find 4-6 breast cancers, but you give irradiation to 994-996 healthy Women
